| Need | Official route | What it returns |
|---|---|---|
| Travis adult felony court case | Travis County District Clerk Criminal Division / Odyssey. | Public users can view a register-of-actions summary for public cases; record copies use the clerk request process. |
| Travis misdemeanor court record | Travis County Clerk misdemeanor search. | County Clerk misdemeanor data/copies with published local scope and date coverage. |
| Broader Texas criminal history | Texas DPS Criminal History Search. | Statewide public criminal-history repository search, not the Travis case file. |
The District Clerk says public online case information provides a register of actions—a summary of filed documents—for public cases.
The same page distinguishes registered attorney/peace-officer document access from public summary access and requires felony copy requests to use the Records Request form.
The county’s criminal-history-check guidance says felony records before 2004 may be archived and not available in the portal. A missing online result is therefore not, by itself, proof that no Travis felony record exists.
| Misdemeanor feature | Published Travis County Clerk scope |
|---|---|
| Case data | The County Clerk says searchable misdemeanor case data is available from June 1986 to the present. |
| Redacted document images | The clerk publishes redacted misdemeanor document images from December 2005 to the present. |
| Misdemeanor indexes | The clerk says misdemeanor indexes are available from January 1981 to the present, with some documents available online. |
| Case types and exclusions | The local system covers Travis County Class A and B misdemeanors plus appealed Class C cases; it does not include federal records or misdemeanor records from other counties or municipalities. |
| Update timing | The clerk says case data is updated every 24 hours and new document images are generally available about 72 hours after filing, so a very recent filing may not appear immediately. |
| Identity inputs and copies | Use full name and date of birth plus other available identifiers. The clerk also provides copy/certification routes when the online result is not the final deliverable. |
Decide whether the case is felony or misdemeanor before asking the wrong clerk for a certified product.
Save name, date of birth where lawfully displayed/used, case number, court and filing/disposition dates.
Ask for a judgment, dismissal, sentence, docket/register, certified search letter, or certified copy as the actual requirement dictates.
Felony copies/search letters come through District Clerk routes; misdemeanor searches/copies come through the County Clerk’s published misdemeanor process.
Travis County expressly notes that some older felony records can be archived outside Odyssey. The misdemeanor system also has published date and source boundaries. If a search should logically find a case but does not, verify the spelling/identifiers, the court level, the date range, and whether a clerk search or archive retrieval is required before reporting a no-record conclusion.
The District Clerk can provide a certified Positive or Negative Search Letter, but the county explicitly says the certification covers only Travis County felony criminal cases.
The same Travis guidance directs statewide criminal-history questions to Texas DPS. DPS uses a separate repository/name-search system and its own matching rules.
A negative Travis felony letter does not mean “no Texas criminal history.” A Texas DPS result does not replace the certified Travis court document when the recipient specifically requires a county court record.
